The Good Fortune Couldn't Last!

I seem to remember that the last two words used in the penultimate Blog to this one were, Yeh...Right, highlighted very boldly.  I wasn't wrong in my lack of enthusiasm for thinking all the problems were out of the way!
I use the term delight a great deal when writing about South Africa, be it about weather, restaurants, scenery, people or food.  My reflections about Sunday revolve around food but are really more pertinent to the house that we are able to rent for our ever lengthening stays in the Western Cape.  You see this home is perfect for the outdoor lifestyle that you are able to enjoy during the long, hot days of a Southern Hemisphere Summer.  It is in a beautiful location, one of the safest in South Africa if truth be told.  It has a lovely big garden which is maintained by Derek and his happy band of workers although they are having a slightly tougher time at the moment due to the serious drought issues and their inability to use the house's extensive irrigation system.  It's a shame, particularly for the lawns which have been nurtured by Colin the owner and which now, in places, have turned to a dry and dusty straw like colour and are far from the vibrant green that we enjoyed last year. Oh and it has a lovely swimming pool where it is perfect to cool off.  All in all, the ingredients are there for the perfect relaxing stay.
Of course no outdoor lifestyle would be complete without a BBQ and this is something that we utilise extensively while we are here. Typical fayre includes kinklip (fish), steaks the size of a small country, ostrich (when you can catch the bloody things that is) and one of my own favourites, pork sausages.
Friend Paul has honed his bbq skills a treat enabling me to sit back with a lovely glass of wine and wait for the finely cooked dish of the day to reach my plate.  Gourmet heaven.
So on Sunday evening I was sitting, glass in hand awaiting the culinary delights when crack, one of the rear legs of my chair collapsed!  Within a millisecond and before I had overcome the first shock, the second rear leg collapsed catapulting my head down and backwards  on to the edge of the low brick wall!!  Ouch, ouch and ouch again.
In this type of situation, your defence and dignity mechanisms kick in because you really don't want to look like a total plonker!  I'm no different and despite blood running down my skull and my head starting to swell, I picked myself up, dusted myself off  and asked Paul, "is the food nearly ready?"
You're probably all now thinking, when did he collapse properly and when did the air ambulance have to be called?  Well this skull is made of tough material and it helps that no brain exists within!  I survived although I have had a pretty sore head for a couple of days.  I'm certain it will be plain sailing from now on.
The BBQ by the way was delicious and I am determined to let Paul do all the cooking from now while I sit on the floor drinking my wine!

  1. You had better change your sun hat for a hard hat! Joking apart I hope you have fully recovered. Even if you have I would milk it for a few more days.
